Existential Series 3 of 3-The Existential Question Every Recruit Should Ask: “Why Do I Play?

April 18, 20252 min read

Every highlight tape, every rep in the gym, every email to a coach… it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of the recruiting process. But sometimes, in the middle of it all, a quiet but powerful question creeps in:

Why do I play?

It’s not just a casual thought. It’s an existential question, one that speaks to identity, passion, purpose, and long-term motivation. And the way you answer it? That can guide your entire recruiting journey.

Chasing Offers vs. Chasing Fit

Let’s be honest: offers look great on social media. Too many athletes chase the image of success rather than the substance of fit. They commit to schools based on hype, not heart. When they arrive on campus, they realize something is off.

But when you start with your why, you shift the focus:

  • From “What school looks best?”
To “What school helps me grow as a player and person?”

  • From “How many offers do I have?”
To “Which program aligns with my values, goals, and energy?”

Why Your “Why” Matters

Your why is your fuel. It’s what keeps you grinding when coaches don’t reply. It’s what drives you to recover after an injury. It’s the difference between burnout and breakthrough.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I play to inspire others?

  • Do I play because it’s my safe space?

  • Do I play for the scholarship or because I genuinely love the game?

No judgment, your answer is yours. Just make sure it’s real. Coaches can sense authenticity. So can your future self.

Use Your “Why” to Stand Out to Coaches

Coaches don’t just recruit talent. They recruit character. When you know your “why,” you speak with purpose and that’s memorable.

Here’s how to bring it into your recruiting:

  • In Emails: Share a short sentence about what motivates you.
“I play because I love competing and being a leader when things get tough.”

  • In Interviews: Let your “why” guide your answers.
“I chose this school because it lines up with who I want to become, not just how I want to play.”

  • In Social Media: Use your captions to show your mindset.
“Every rep is bigger than the game, it’s about who I’m becoming.”

Reflection Prompts for Finding Your Why

Take 10 minutes this week to journal on these:

  1. What do I love most about my sport?

  2. When did I first realize this mattered to me?

  3. Who do I play for, myself, my family, my future?

  4. What do I want coaches to remember about me?

  5. If I stopped playing today, what would I miss the most?

Final Thought: Purpose Makes the Process Worth It

The recruiting journey is full of challenges. But when you’re rooted in purpose, the process becomes more than stats and offers, it becomes a story of growth, grit, and passion. And that’s the kind of story colleges want to recruit.
