No Coach Left Behind: You Are Not a Recruiter—And You Are Not Behind

Let’s clear something up right now: you are not a college recruiter.

And you’re not falling short because you’re not sending 50 emails or cutting highlight film for your athletes.

You’re a coach. A mentor. A leader. In 2025, that role is more valuable and more complicated than ever.

Between managing your team, teaching classes, meeting with parents, attending games, and putting out daily fires, the recruiting expectations placed on you can feel… impossible.

And yet, many coaches carry this invisible pressure:

“I should be doing more. I’m letting my players down.”

Here’s the truth: you’re not behind. You need boundaries and support.

You Don’t Have to Do It All

You’re not expected to be the editor, the agent, and the academic advisor. Trying to be everything for everyone leads to one outcome: burnout.

Permit yourself to let go of the guilt and redirect the responsibility. Empower your athletes to take ownership of their recruiting process.

Your Role Is Still Powerful

You may not be sending the emails, but your word still carries weight.

  • Your recommendation can open doors.

  • Your insight on character and work ethic matters to college coaches.

  • Your leadership can guide athletes to the right support systems and tools.

You’re not out of the picture, you are just not the engine behind the recruiting machine.

Start With These Habits:

  • Create a resource list for athletes (platforms, timelines, highlight tips)

  • Host one group recruiting talk per season

  • Encourage self-led recruiting with your support behind them

  • Celebrate progress, but don’t personalize the pressure

Coaches, you’ve already done more than enough.

Now, let’s shift from feeling behind to building balance. You don’t need to do everything. You need a system that supports you, so you can continue to support them.
